Quilt top

At long last....the quilt top is finished!

Next on the "to-do" list is to get batting & backing to sandwich & then machine quilt.

From top left, clockwise: Dave, Shannah, Me, Faith/Grandpa, Gale & Brenda, BSBTHR, Sam & Sue, Jon & Janet, Aunt Cathy & Grandma Ruth, Don & Iva.

2 other family fabrics were not able to be put in as turtles. One is Aunt Mary Jo's appliqued "chick" - bottom row.

The other is Jen & Sheldon's fabrics: pink Winnie the pooh (middle area) & the white bkgnd duck fabric (left column).

PROGRESS!

Here's the final layout that I decided on. I decided to sort the fabrics by colors & then spin them out from the center starting with pink. That way the white/cream fabrics don't touch the off-white turtle squares & get lost.




After 8 long months of collecting & waiting...I am finally sewing the squares together!!! Wahoo! I now have about 3/4 of the top sewn. I am still missing 1 square (upper left corner area), but I asked what color it was so I could leave a space for it. I had to add 8 extra fabrics of my own to make the top symmetrical, which of course was NOT a problem with the fun stash of novelty prints that I have. :)

It feels SO good to be able to start putting this quilt together instead of seeing it as a stack of pieces. I just MIGHT get it done before we leave...& that is a good feeling. :)

Assembling the "OHGWQ"

"OHGWQ" = 100 Good Wishes Quilt

Deciding on a pattern/layout was VERY hard! There are so many options for patterns & layout...& I only have 1 chance at it since all these fabrics are "onsies".

After much decision, I decided to use the "Turtle Xing" pattern from www.6Banyans.com. I was going to use the ladybug pattern, but I'm going to save that for all the ladybug fabric that I traded & make a separate quilt.

Since I'm limited on the # of turtle blocks I can have due to size limitations (otherwise it would be GINORMOUS!)...the turtles are reserved for fabric from family members. I needed to find a way to incorporate more than 1 fabric, so I divided Sam & Sue's turtle shell into 3 parts, Jon & Janet's into 2, combined Mom & Grandpa/Grandma because the pink matched... The remainder 130 blocks were cut to size (6.5") & will be used to fill in between the turtles & the border.




This turtle represents my husband. I picked out the fabric for him because he's a hot sauce fan. :)

Pattern Layout

I'm pretty sure I decided on the layout of the quilt to feature all the fabrics & the ones I'm adding for our family...which is around 150 total. I bought the cream background fabric, black for the ladybugs, green for the turtles...& of course a few stray fat quarters that I thought were cute...& on sale. :)

The finished quilt should be close to 72x90 if I don't choose to add a border.

I might get to start on it tomorrow! But should probably get to bed first...
